English Exam for Teacher Certification

As of September 2008, a person who enrols in a teacher education specialization for the first time must demonstrate proficiency in the language of instruction on an exam recognized by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS) in order to be recommended for certification. This exam must be passed before the start of the third internship or field experience. This condition applies, as well, to all persons seeking a teaching authorization who were certified outside Quebec.

The English Exam for Teacher Certification (EETC) is an exam recognized by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport as meeting this condition for teacher certification. Students enrolled in a teacher education specialization and teachers certified outside Quebec are required to pass this exam. The exam is administered on site at Concordia University, Bishop's University and McGill University. The specific dates, times and location for each university are determined annually in accordance with their respective academic calendars.

The EETC requires you to demonstrate your level of competence in the specific forms and styles of language needed for successful communication in the teaching profession. This is Competency 2 of the "12 core professional competencies for the teaching profession" created by the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS).

The EETC is a 2-hour exam with two parts, each designed to collect information on different types of language skills. Part A consists of short objective language tasks, and Part B consists of longer professional writing tasks. There are no choices - you must do every task in both parts of the exam. You must pass both of these parts to pass the exam.
